Guitar Sheet Music

Published by:

As a guitarist do you need to read guitar sheet music ? This is a question that I see asked a lot especially by beginners or people interested in learning guitar that have never picked up a guitar before.

The answer depends on your goals as a guitarist and what you want to be able to do. Personally I feel that one should learn to read music and feel that to be the best guitarist you can be that you should study and learn every aspect of guitar.

Towards the end of this article I will give a list of books I recommend that will help you with reading music, reading tablature and reading guitar charts.

My Music & Guitar Experience…

Feb 2000 me with no shirt and sunglasses the normal outfit

I started playing guitar at the age of 15 in 1985 Self taught except for about 3 lessons…

In 1995, I joined a local church bell choir in order to have to read music/count time and jumped right in at an intermediate level from self learning after having just one hour lesson on the basics of note duration from a fellow guitar player

In 1999, the first time I played Eddie Van Halens most famous solo ” ERUPTION ” on stage was one of the most exciting experiences in my life, with the colored lights shining on me, the awesome tone of my Ibanez custom guitar through my Marshal artist tube head, hearing the audience hooting, hollering and just going wild holding up their beer bottles, standing on their chairs lighting their lighters was AWESOME…

My performing career was short lived, as I had quit playing the guitar and started living a “family” style life when my son Dakota was born.

After a 10 year hiatus (2001-2011) I picked the guitar back up (though I did buy a guitar after not playing one a whole year but probably only picked it up once for about an hour, every 6 months that 10 year period though, I did play bass a bit during the last 3 years of that 10 year time frame) and enrolled in the Jim Sutton Institute of guitar of where I have earned my music theory certificate ( Jim Sutton is alumni from Berklee school of music ),,,

I have also earned a fret board mastery certificate through Guitar Mastery Method…

There is nothing more satisfying than being able to improvise good solos or play your favorite songs and playing in a band setting or performing in front of people….even playing your favorite songs for your own enjoyment or playing along with a backing track or looper can be quite full filling

The goal is to give information and help one progress in their guitar journey through recommended resources, online courses, videos/tutorials and tips.

If you ever need a hand or have any questions, feel free to leave them in comments below and I will be more than happy to help you out.

All the best,

ME 1995
